Mining & Milling Brief | 30 October 2026 | News disclosures: 28–29 October 2026
A concentrator expansion announcement can be useful to a procurement team, but the delivery plan needs more detail than the headline. Design capacity, commissioning progress and sustained ore treatment describe different stages. For grinding media, the practical question is how to align approved specifications, initial loading and replenishment with the plant’s actual operating schedule.
Three updates worth reading together
- Chile: Capstone targets sustained Mantoverde throughput of 45,000 t/d from early 2027 after September expansion tie-ins, according to its 29 October update. [1]
- Ethiopia: Allied Gold’s 29 October update reports energized SAG and ball mill drives at Kurmuk, with commissioning tests nearing completion. [2]
- Panama: First Quantum’s 28 October update describes sequential recommissioning of Cobre Panamá’s three processing trains under its authorized stockpile-treatment program. [3]
These disclosures describe different operating milestones. They provide context for supply planning; the following checklist is Gangyan’s editorial interpretation, not a statement of these projects’ steel-ball orders or approved product specifications.
Read the milestone before forecasting consumption
Ask what the reported number represents: design capacity, a short test, an operating-day average or a calendar-period average. Check the measurement period and whether downtime is included. A brief high-throughput run is useful evidence of progress, but a replenishment forecast needs an operating profile over the delivery period.
For a restart, also confirm the scope of authorized activity and the intended ore source. Operating a treatment circuit and resuming extraction are separate decisions. The approved production schedule should be the starting point for purchasing discussions.
Separate initial loading from replenishment
An initial ball charge is an inventory requirement established for a particular mill and startup procedure. Replenishment replaces media consumed or removed during operation. Combining them into one assumed monthly figure makes it harder to see when material is actually needed.
For a new line, request the approved charge schedule from the plant team. For an existing line, reconcile usable stock, material already in the mill and confirmed inbound deliveries. Any adjustment to charge level or mill speed belongs within an engineering review; Metso’s upgrade guidance likewise treats these changes in the context of mechanical and process assessment. [4]
A practical planning sheet for the ramp-up
| Stage | Confirm with the plant | Supply-planning question |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-start | Approved media specification and initial loading schedule | Which batches must be released before startup? |
| Ramp-up | Expected operating hours, ore feed and current stock | Which delivery dates still work if the startup schedule moves? |
| Stable operation | Actual throughput, media additions and stock reconciliation | What replenishment rate is supported by representative operating data? |
Use this as a discussion framework rather than a universal loading procedure. The mill supplier’s limits and the site’s approved commissioning instructions take precedence.
Six details to confirm before releasing a shipment
- Mill and duty: distinguish the SAG mill, ball mill and any regrind stage; confirm the media type each circuit requires.
- Specification: agree diameter, material requirements, dimensional tolerances and inspection records. A project headline cannot establish the correct ball grade.
- Ore and product: record expected feed changes and the required product size so that later operating comparisons have context.
- Delivery: confirm the delivery port, inland route, unloading arrangements and the date when stock must be available at the plant.
- Inventory: distinguish stock on hand, committed incoming material and any agreed safety stock; record who updates each figure.
- Review point: agree when the next order can be adjusted using actual operating data and which changes require technical approval.
Once the circuit has representative operating data, use a consistent method to evaluate consumption and delivered cost. Our grinding-ball consumption and mine-trial guide addresses that later evaluation step.
