How to Properly Add Steel Balls for the First Time When Starting Up a Ball Mill?

Importance of Proper Steel Ball Addition in Ball Mill Start-up

At Shandong Gangyan Grinding Ball Co., Ltd., we specialize in producing a wide range of high-quality grinding balls that are engineered to optimize the performance of ball mills. Our products are designed to enhance grinding efficiency, improve mill stability, and extend the lifespan of your equipment. When a new ball mill is assembled, it requires a period of running-in before it can begin full-scale production. This initial phase is critical, and understanding how to properly add steel balls is essential for ensuring smooth operation and achieving optimal efficiency.

How to Properly Distribute Steel Balls in Ball Mills?

The steel balls used in ball mills are available in three distinct sizes: large, medium, and small. The large balls come in diameters of 120mm and 100mm, the medium balls have a diameter of 80mm, and the small balls are available in either 60mm or 40mm sizes. During normal mill operations, small balls are typically not required. This is because the friction between the steel balls, the balls and the ore, and the balls and the ball mill liner generates sufficient wear, causing the large balls to break down into smaller sizes over time. This process ensures efficient grinding during regular operation.

Recommended Ratio of Large, Medium, and Small Steel Balls

However, when starting up a ball mill for the first time, a different approach is needed. A mixture of large, medium, and small balls must be added in the following ratio: 30%-40% large balls, 30%-40% medium balls, and 30% small balls. This balanced combination ensures that the ball mill gradually reaches optimal grinding performance while minimizing potential mechanical stress and wear during the initial phase.

Managing Steel Ball Wear and Replenishment for Long-Term Performance

In addition to the correct ball size distribution, the first ball loading should be limited to 80% of the manufacturer’s recommended capacity. This initial loading helps prevent excessive strain on the ball mill’s components during the early stages of operation. After installation, the large and small gears must mesh properly, and the mill’s processing capacity should gradually increase. After the ball mill has been running continuously for two to three days, it’s important to check the meshing status of the gears to ensure everything is functioning properly. Once you confirm that the system is stable, you can open the manhole and add the remaining 20% of the steel balls.

For instance, consider a 1.5×3-meter ball mill, model MQG1530, with a recommended ball loading capacity of 10 tons. During the first loading, only 80% (or 8 tons) of the steel balls should be added. These 8 tons should be distributed as follows: 2.4-3.2 tons of large balls (30%-40%), 2.4-3.2 tons of medium balls (30%-40%), and 2.4 tons of small balls (30%). After the ball mill has operated for some time and the components have undergone proper wear and tear, you can add the remaining 20% of the steel balls.

Regular replenishment of steel balls is essential to compensate for wear and ensure that the ball mill operates at peak efficiency. Over time, the steel balls will wear down, and their size will change, which can affect the overall performance of the mill. Therefore, it’s crucial to monitor and adjust the ball load regularly to maintain the ideal charge ratio. Regular Replenishment of Steel Balls to Maintain Grinding Efficiency
It’s important to note that a ball mill in normal operation typically does not require small balls, unless there is a situation where the useful mineral particles have not been completely dissociated. In such cases, where the fineness of grinding does not meet the flotation requirements, adding a small number of small balls may help achieve the desired grinding effect.
